Marugoto Shokudou - Unique Tri-Colored Tobiko Chirashi Don
SALMON IKURA DON ($16.90)
Salmon Donburi, also known as Hokkaidon is one the common dishes found in most Japanese restaurant. The ones serve at Marugoto Shokudou come with thinly sliced salmon sashimi and ikura on a bed of vinegared rice, and garnish with white turnip, wasabi and pickled ginger. This dish also comes with a side of miso soup, pickles and and 2 slices of watermelon.
For a dish with very few ingredients, even a minor flaw is conspicuous. The Japanese rice was well seasoned but lacked the distinct textural quality and felt slightly mushy, while the Ikura tasted oddly sweet instead of salty. The quality and thickness of the salmon slices were lacking, and for this price, a trip to The Sushi Bar is definitely the better option.
With an assortment of ten different seafood, its puzzling to know where to start. The Sashimi were sliced in different thickness, with some being generously thick while others rather thin. In terms of quality, the seafood tasted decent aside from the prawn, where it tasted bland from over-boiling.
CHIRASHI DELUXE ($28.80)
Vibrant and eye-catching Chirashi Donburi beautifully presented on a granite bowl consisting of Salmon, Red Snapper, Swordfish, Yellowtail, Maguro, Chutoro, Tako, Ikura, Tobiko and Prawn on a bed of Vinegared Rice, garnished with Shiso leaves, White radish and Wasabi.
The tri-colored tobiko was unique, not only for it's colored but taste as well. Instead of the usual briny and savory burst, the tobiko is soaked in a fruity marinate to infused the flavors resulting in a refreshing sweetness with a hint of yuzu aftertaste.
