Remember the times when you sat down as a family and tasted your mum's cooking? The meal that I just had at 5 Little Bears (五只小熊) definitely hit all the right (and nostalgic) spot, reminding me of the purest meaning of a simple yet comforting home-cooked meal.
SALTED CRISPY CHICKEN ($4.00)
Who doesn't love crispy fried chicken? It's perfect as a takeaway snack and also a dish that is great for sharing on the dinner table. The crispy batter coats nicely with the chicken thigh, well seasoned and pairs really well with the chili powder for that kick of (mild) spiciness.
HONEY GLAZED CHICKEN CHOP ($4.80)
The honey glazed chicken chop was the preferred variation of the two that we tried. The sweetness of the glaze helps whet our appetite, which allows us to truly appreciate the tenderness and juiciness of the chicken here. Not to mention that the portion size is pretty decent as well, especially considering that the price point isn't very high at all!
CRISPY MUSHROOMS ($3.00)
A simple combination of crispy batter and shitake mushrooms. Not the best thing that we have ever tried, nor the most flavorsome. Nothing too fancy going on here and frankly speaking it can lean a little too plain for our tastebud. However, if you prefer to include something less heavy on your stomach then this should pair well with the rest of the dishes.
PORK CHOP BENTO ($7.50)
A Japanese-style Bento packed meal that consists of rice, half a braised egg, stir-fried cabbage and long beans, scrambled eggs and tomatoes, pork chop and pickled cucumber.
The highlight of this bento set definitely goes to the pork chop. Bone-in tender and juicy meat with a beautiful crust on the outside for a nice crunchy texture that feels so satisfying in your mouth.
BRAISED PORK RICE ($5.00)
A classic Taiwanese comfort food that is surprisingly hard to find in Singapore, so this is a definite must order for us. It consists of minced braised pork belly, pickled mustard greens, half a braised egg and boiled Chinese cabbage (bok choy) with a layer of rice beneath.
The combination of pork fat and braised meat with rice is absolutely addictive and pairing it with pickled mustard greens helps to cut through the greasiness which allows you to enjoy both the sinful greasiness of the dish yet without feeling jelat. The bok choy adds a nice crunch factor to the dish and it is always good to be able to include some veggies in our diet.

For the few gunkans we tried, the seaweed was lacking in crispness. The presentation was disappointing which made the sushi appeared stale looking. After a few plates (lesser than our norm), it has lost its appeal and we couldn't reach out for more.
