Sushi Tei - My first bite of sea urchin aka Uni
UNI SUSHI ($8.50)
Uni is the edible part of the sea urchin, and while some mistaken it for their roe, the gold colored substance is actually it's gonads. For a hefty price of $8.50 each, I indulged in this soft uniquely textured sea urchin in one mouthful. Mildly sweet, briny and metallic in taste, the uni complimented well with the nicely textured vinegared rice and seaweed, even though it was truly not necessary.
ANKIMO SUSHI ($4.00)
Ankimo is a Japanese dish that uses the liver from a Monk fish. It is commonly referred to as the foie gras of the sea, for its smooth buttery texture. The ones at Sushi Tei was served in the form of a nigiri at $4.00 a pair. The texture resembles luncheon meat, and taste-wise a little fishy and livery.
HON MAGURO SANSYOKU DON ($17.80)
Featured on their summer menu is a beautiful medley of tuna and fresh vegetables on a bed a vinegared rice. Vibrant and fresh tuna that uses two grades of meat; the akami and the chūtoro. The chūtoro has a pleasant sour taste that slightly melts in your mouth while the akami contrasts with its soft and delicate mouth-feel meat. The crunch from the refreshing vegetables and perfectly cooked textured rice completes the dish as whole.
With a choice of either chicken or pork, the chicken was crispy and succulent with a decent thickness. Paired with a mildly spicy-sweet curry and soft potatoes and carrots, it goes really well with the fluffy Japanese rice. A simple Japanese classic dish executed well.
