Zi Zai Vegetarian - Affordable And Delicious Chinese Vegetarian Tze Char

Zi Zai Vegetarian has been a popular chain restaurant serving up local Chinese vegetarian cuisine, such as the popular hotplate tofu, preserved radish omelette and seaweed soup. With outlets in Tampines and Yishun, I decided to head to the latter branch for some Tzr Char delicacy.

PLAIN PRATA ($1.00)
The unfamiliar sight of raw dough being flipped on a flat iron pan may seem weird at a Chinese restaurant, but the smell of freshly-made prata was just too tempting. Served with a delicious rich vegetable curry, tear through layers of chewy soft dough and savor the full-bodied prata.

SAMBAL KANG KONG ($7.00)
Sharing a plate of stir-fried sambal kang kong at a Tze Char restaurant is one of the simple joys of life, and even though the kang kong was crunchy and thoroughly cooked, unlike the non-vegetarian version, the lack of belachan made the vegetables bland. The mock fish-cake slices however, tasted pretty delicious with a resemblance to mushrooms.

YAM RING ($13.00)

Another great dish for sharing is the yam ring which comprises of a thick wall of soft mashed yam, molded into a shape of a basket and then deep fried, filled with an assortment of ingredients and garnished with fried glass noodles.

Despite the yam basket lacking it's crispy hard shell, the mashed yam was delicately soft and smooth with a light seasoning to bring out it's natural flavor. We really liked the toasted almond nuts that were lightly salted, together with the sweet and tender mock meat. It was a little on the pricey side for a small portion, but the flavors were not bad.

CEREAL PRAWN (8.00/12.00/16.00)
The cereal prawns served here is a definite MUST ORDER. I just love the crispy and crunchy cereal mix with chili padi and curry leaves.

The portion was quite reasonable for the price.

A close up at one of the mock prawn with a generous scoop of cereal flakes.

Not too oily at all!

This dish really surprised me as I've never had mock prawns before. In terms of texture and taste, it was nearly identical.

Really delicious,

HOTPLATE TOFU (7.00/10.00/13.00)
A classic dish at all tze char place, is the hotplate tofu. Sizzling and bubbling away when it landed on our table.

The dish consists of a delicious sweet-savory sauce on a bed of egg as the base, with large chunks of deep fried tofu and minced mock meat on the top.

The tofu was deep fried for a few minutes to get that firm exterior but still retains its soft-fall apart in your mouth bite.

The mock minced meat was also another shocker, which has the same texture as the real stuff!

Another delicious dish to try here!

SEAWEED SOUP (4.00/6.00/8.00)
The soup was simple and tasted like how it looked. Filled with vegetables that consists of cabbage, seaweed and tomatoes, tofu and topped with seaweed.

A clear refreshing soup that has a natural sweetness from the vegetables and a strong seaweed taste that I simply love.

Not bad dish to share among the table.
