What are the first few things that come to your mind when I mention Yishun? If you are not from the North, you would probably think that it is a rather oddly fascinating place in Singapore where all the interesting stories are born. Yishun has definitely become such a meme-able place on social media which is really cool if you ask me. Well, apart from its enthralling personality, it is undeniable that Yishun is also the home to many well-known food establishment like 925 Yishun Chicken Rice, Chong Pang Nasi Lemak, and 928 Laksa which I have previously blogged about.
Spoiler Alert: You would definitely want to check these posts out since these places serve some really yummy local food.
One Sushi is the new sensation especially among the North-ians as it is the new boy in town offering Japanese food at a reasonable price point; considering it is in a neighbourhood setting. Situated at Yishun Town Square, the location is slightly off from the busy Northpoint City but it is definitely not hard to find.
One Sushi is celebrating its opening with an attractive promotion that rivals Sushi Express, at only $0.88 instead of the usual $1.50. The selection offers over 50 different variety of sushi which certainly appeals to a lot of people to come and check out what is it all about. We battled the long queue and waited approx. 40 minutes to try their sushi.
Green tea packets and the usual condiments that you would expect from a Japanese restaurant such as pickled ginger, wasabi and soy sauce are provided. Aside from the the sushi available on the conveyor belt, àla carte dishes can also be ordered from their tablets if you are looking into giving their more premium dishes a try.
It is indisputable that rice plays an important role when it comes to sushi. However, during our visit the texture was slightly mushy and wasn't al-dente. The standard for each sushi varies, little consistency is found, with some of the rice ball not being able to hold up its own weight and break apart when attempt to pick it up with a pair of chopsticks. In terms of flavour, the rice was fairly well seasoned.
For the few gunkans we tried, the seaweed was lacking in crispness. The presentation was disappointing which made the sushi appeared stale looking. After a few plates (lesser than our norm), it has lost its appeal and we couldn't reach out for more.
The salmon nigiri was the supposed star of the show, but with its already subpar rice, even the salmon could not salvage the mess. The sliced salmon alone was decent, but the overall taste was hardly up to standard.
Even though we have only tried the few sushi options from the $1.50 category as we really want to test out how much it would compare with Sushi Express, we feel that the dishes that we did try could be given more attention from the chefs. Since the majority of customers are coming just for the promotion to give this place a try before they decide if they would frequent this place in the future.
We do not really recommend One Sushi for large groups and children.
By observation, we could see that One Sushi is still in its beginning stage, judging from the constant noisy kitchen workspace, inconsistent food quality, and rather unorganised work flow.
Maybe it will get better in the future, who knows?
