Sedap Thai - The First Halal Certified Mookata

Meat sizzling away on a dome-shaped grill, while seafood and vegetables are bubbling away in a chicken broth moat. This common sight is known as Mookata, which directly translate to "pork" and "skillet".

Located in a coffee shop, Sedap Thai is a halal certified stall, that replaces the conventional pork to other meats such as chicken and beef, making it one of the few places where Muslims will be able to have a taste of Thai Barbecue!

PLATTER SET ($20.00)
Ala Carte dishes are priced from $1.50 for processed food such as chicken hot dogs and crab sticks, while premium items like fresh beef slice and prawns are priced at $2.50. We conveniently ordered a platter set which comes with 15 items including a vegetable basket but excluding rice ($0.50).

The dipping sauce provided is similar to a ketchup-chili concoction, thick in consistency, sweet and mildly spicy. I would much prefer a spicier sauce, as that's what Thai Cuisine is all about!

Pork lard is usually used to grease the metal skillet, in this case, chicken skin was used instead. Sadly it was a futile attempt as the sliced meats still stick to the searing surface nonetheless.

An essential component to every Mookata is the soup. With only one soup base to choose from, the chicken soup tasted surprisingly insipid, solely dependent on the vegetables for flavor.

Portion was slightly disappointing but what's more was the lack of marinate and seasonings in the beef slice and minced beef. The other ingredients such as the processed food was decent and the vegetables were fresh. Sadly neither the meats, nor the sauce left a lasting impression on us.
